Eco Committee

At Newton Leys Primary School, we care deeply about environmental issues and are committed to protecting our planet for future generations.

Each year, children are given the opportunity to become an Eco Warrior. One representative from every class, from Reception through to Year 6, is selected to join our Eco Committee. Together, they lead a variety of eco-projects and challenges that help make our school more sustainable, promote environmental learning, and positively impact our local community.

For the past several years, we have participated in the Eco-Schools Programme, following its seven-step framework to develop environmental awareness and action across the school.

2022-2023

The Eco Committee focused on:

  • Biodiversity
  • School Grounds
  • Energy

Throughout the year, pupils participated in a range of environmental initiatives, including:

  • National Recycling Week
  • Earth Day
  • RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch
  • The Great Big School Clean
  • Cut Your Carbon Week
  • Switch Off Fortnight

In recognition of our commitment and achievements, we were awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.

2023-2024

The Eco Committee chose to focus on:

  • Healthy Living
  • Water
  • School Grounds

Our projects and activities included:

  • Woodland Trust tree planting
  • Keep Britain Tidy campaign
  • Pre-loved uniform sale
  • National Vegetarian Week
  • World Water Day
  • National Children's Gardening Week

Our pre-loved uniform sale raised more than £200, enabling us to purchase additional resources to support future Eco Committee projects.

We were proud to receive the Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction (Plaque Award) in recognition of our continued environmental leadership.

2024-2025

Throughout the year, pupils took part in a wide range of environmental initiatives, including:

  • National Recycling Week activities
  • Planting spring bulbs around the school grounds
  • Building a bug hotel for Earth Day
  • Donating pre-loved clothes through The Little Recyclers

As part of our partnership with Anglian Water, pupils in KS2 participated in engaging sessions on water sustainability, the whole school attended a special assembly and our Eco Committee took part in dedicated water-saving workshops.

We were delighted to achieve both the Bronze Woodland Trust Award & Anglian Water Award.

2025-2026

Our Eco Committee played a key role in organising a whole-school Earth Day celebration. Activities included:

  • A tree party
  • Tree dressing
  • Transient nature art
  • Leaf rubbing
  • Watercolour tree painting
  • Nature scavenger hunts
  • Spotting wildlife
  • Making natural garlands

Every child in the school took part, making it a fantastic day of learning, creativity, and environmental awareness.

Building on our previous success, we were proud to achieve both the Silver and Gold Woodland Trust Awards.

This year, our newly elected Eco Committee will be working hard towards our next goal: achieving the prestigious Platinum Woodland Trust Award. We are excited to continue developing our environmental projects and encouraging all pupils to take an active role in caring for our planet.
