Year 4

Welcome to our Year 4 page. We have lots of information below about what it is like to be in Year 4 at our school and what the children will be learning this year.

Life in Year 4

During Year 4, the children will have the opportunity to attend the two-night residential to The Frontier Centre, Irthlingborough near Northampton (18th to 20th March 2026). The Frontier Centre is set in Northamptonshire in the heart of England and surrounded by beautiful countryside. There is a meeting for parents on Tuesday 23rd September at 3:15pm to give you more information. The children will also have the opportunity to go swimming during the Spring and Summer Term.

Key information

Uniform

Please see the link https://www.newtonleysprimary.org/page/?title=Uniform&pid=48 for our uniform policy. Please note that if your child is not in the correct uniform, we will let you know so that you can help them be in the correct uniform the following day. This includes jewellery, if it is not worn for a religious reason, please keep this at home.

P.E. days

Year 4's P.E. day is on a Monday. Please ensure your child comes to school in their P.E. kit on these days (black shorts/joggers/leggings, white t-shirt, black jumper/zip hoody and trainers). Earrings must be removed or covered for PE.

Home learning

We know that our children will excel the most through school when they are reading, practising their times tables and spellings at home. Please ensure that your child is reading as often as possible - this should include a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. They should also be practising their times tables to 12X12 ready for the National Tests in the Summer Term. Children should also practise their spelling each week ready for a test each Friday. This will give them the best chance of progression. We know that children love to learn at home and if they create presentations or complete projects of something they are engaged with, we love to see these.

We don't have reading records at our school this year. This is following feedback and pupil voice however, please rest assured that your child is being listened to with their reading at school and your support with this at home gives your child the best chances in developing their reading.

Snacks

Please make sure your child brings a ‘healthy’ snack to school – ideally a piece of fruit or something similar. As well as, a water bottle.

Toys

We know that our children have some lovely toys at home that they would love to share with their friends. Please help us to keep these safe by making sure that they don't come into school. We know how upsetting it can be if personal belongings get lost or broken as they are played with and please rest assured, we already have lots of toys at school.
