Year 1

Welcome to our Nursery page. We have lots of information below about what it is like to be in our school nursery and what the children will be learning this year.

Life in Year 1

We know that Year 1 is a very big step for our children to move from Early Years to start more formalised learning as they mature. We continue with continuous provision in Year 1 to support them to transition towards the Primary School part of the National Curriculum. This means there will still be opportunities for them to learn from play and other activities with formalised teaching at tables being part of their day. As they are working closely with the teacher in this format to support them with this, you will not receive updates on Tapestry. You will however, see your child's teacher on 2 parents evenings throughout the year, where you can see your child's work, and get a written report at the end of the year. If you ever have any questions or concerns, you will be able to discuss these at pick ups but can always email them to arrange a meeting.

Key information

Our Year 1 Family

This year, the staff that work with our children in Year 1 the most are:

Mrs Hillyer 1A, Mrs Scarito and Mrs Brackenbury 1B, and Mrs Forbes 1C, HLTA, TAs, P.E. and Art teachers.

Uniform

Please see the link https://www.newtonleysprimary.org/page/?title=Uniform&pid=48 for our uniform policy. Please note that if your child is not in the correct uniform, we will let you know so that you can help them be in the correct uniform the following day. This includes jewellery, if it is not worn for a religious reason, please keep this at home.

P.E. days

Year 1's P.E. day is on a Wednesday. Please ensure your child comes to school in their P.E. kit on these days.

Home learning

We know that our children will excel the most through school when they are reading and practising phonics at home. Please ensure that your child is reading and practising their phonics 'Read Write Inc' activities daily for at least 10 minutes at home. This will give them the best chance of progression. We know that children love to learn at home and if they complete projects of something they are engaged with, we love to see these.

We don't have reading records at our school this year. This is following feedback and pupil voice however, please rest assured that we are listening to your child read regularly and your support with this at home gives your child the best chances in developing their reading.

Snacks

Healthy snacks are provided at morning break for all Year 1 and 2 children. If you would prefer to send in a healthy snack for your child to eat after morning breaktime, we would suggest fruit, cereal bars, cheese or a yogurt pouch. Please do not send in snacks with any nuts, crisps, chocolate or sweets.

Toys

We know that our children have some lovely toys at home that they would love to share with their friends. Please help us to keep these safe by making sure that they don't come into school. We know how upsetting it can be if personal belongings get lost or broken as they are played with and please rest assured, we already have lots of toys at school.
