Nursery

Welcome to our Nursery page. We have lots of information below about what it is like to be in our school nursery and what the children will be learning this year.

Life in Nursery

Life in nursery is busy and lots of fun! Miss Christmas is the Nursery teacher, she is supported by a lovely team of staff - Mrs Tucker, Mrs Sicurello, Mrs Adams, Miss Ngando and Mrs Canavan.

We open our doors at 8.15 am to welcome the children in, with so many children this takes a little while, so we close our nursery door at 8.25 am, please make sure you are here by then as we are unable to open the nursery door beyond this time. Later arrivals will need to come in through our main office.

Our day is mainly play based, however we also enjoy time together as a whole group, and in smaller groups to share songs, stories and some activities that support the children's learning across all areas of development.

The children will come home tired, and their uniform may not be as pristine as when they arrived - this is the sign of a day full of curiosity, exploration and play!

Most of our children leave at 3.15 pm; please can we ask that when collecting, you make an organised line that snakes around against the building, next to our garden area; this will help us to get the children out to you safely one by one, thank you for your support with this.

Please make sure you keep an open line of communication with our nursery staff - we are all here to support your child as best as we can, and we can do this best when we are kept up to date with any changes or worries, thank you!

Key information

PE

PE will happen on different days for different children this term as a trial. As this will be basic movement in the first instance, please do not worry about sending them in in a PE uniform. When this changes we will inform you which days they are required to have a t-shirt and black hoody/jumper.

Uniform

Uniform is very relaxed in our early years. It is important they feel comfortable to move around easily without restriction. They can wear a white polo shirt, a purple Newton Leys jumper or cardigan, black leggings/joggers/shorts, white/grey socks and comfortable black trainers.

Dressing for the weather

Our children like to be outdoors in all weathers and this is something we actively encourage. Please make sure as it gets colder they have a warm coat, hat and gloves. If you would like to leave a pair of wellington boots here for them, you are very welcome to do so. It goes without saying that all items need to be named so if lost, we can successfully reunite items with their owner!

Snack time

The children can access snack throughout the morning. This is usually fruit and vegetables, although we do sometimes have snacks that reflect celebrations during that time of year (noodles during Lunar New Year are always a firm favourite!). The children will have a window of time to access snacks at the snack bar, that is always supervised by an adult. Throughout the day, we have water and milk available.

Toys

Children should not bring any of their own toys into nursery. Thank you.

Attendance

As part of our safeguarding policy, we monitor our attendance daily. Please let the office know if your child is not going to be in school by phonecall or through the School Gateway app. We will call you to check if your child has not attended school and we haven't had any contact to check everything is ok. For more information, please see our attendance policy on our school website: https://www.newtonleysprimary.org/page/?title=School+Policies&pid=16

Tapestry

Tapestry is the online journal we use to keep you updated with observations from your child's day. We do try to keep these observations regular, however we much prefer to spend our time playing and supporting the children, so please don't worry if you don't see too much. We do love to see what the children achieve and experience at home too, so please do send in your photos and videos - these may include achieving a new skill (independently fastening buttons, brushing their own hair etc), helping out at home with making a meal, riding their bike or enjoying sharing a story at home with a family member.

You will also be kept up to date with a focus rhyme of the week, and an overview of learning planned for the week. This will enable you to explore similar learning at home too should you wish too.
